Edo Lifts Suspension on State Security Corps Post-Election

The Edo State Government has lifted the suspension on the operations of the state security corps, aiming to enhance safety across the state. This decision was announced by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Musa Ikhilor, in a statement released on Friday in Benin City.

The suspension, initiated in September 2024 by the Inspector General of Police, was part of measures to ensure a secure environment during the 21 September gubernatorial election. According to constitutional guidelines, the Nigeria Police Force is solely responsible for election security, although it collaborates with other agencies under the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES).

With the elections successfully concluded, Governor Monday Okpebholo approved the reinstatement of the Edo State Security Corps. This move signifies a renewed focus on strengthening the state’s security infrastructure to protect its citizens effectively.

Ikhilor explained that the reinstatement aligns with the government’s commitment to improving safety and security for all residents. He emphasized the importance of the corps in maintaining law and order and highlighted that all returning officers must report to the office of the State Corps Commander or any of the three zonal offices. This directive aims to ensure a smooth transition and efficient deployment of personnel.

The decision reflects the state government’s acknowledgment of the critical role played by the Edo State Security Corps in fortifying its security architecture. By lifting the suspension, the government seeks to restore the corps to full operational capacity, ensuring they can actively contribute to maintaining peace and stability across the state.

This development underscores the Edo State Government’s broader efforts to address security concerns, safeguard its citizens, and create an environment conducive to social and economic growth. The reinstated security corps is expected to complement existing security measures and bolster the state’s readiness to respond to potential challenges.

The move has been welcomed by stakeholders as a step towards a more secure and stable Edo State. As the security corps resumes its duties, its contributions will be closely monitored to ensure effective service delivery and the continued safety of residents.
