Trailblazing Former Karachuonyo MP Phoebe Asiyo Dies at 93

Former Karachuonyo Member of Parliament Phoebe Asiyo, a respected pioneer in Kenya’s political and women's rights movements, has died at the age of 93.

Asiyo was one of the first Kenyan women to serve in Parliament and played a key role in advancing gender equality at a time when women faced widespread discrimination in politics and public life.

News of her passing prompted an outpouring of tributes from across the political spectrum, with many leaders acknowledging her groundbreaking work. ODM National Chairman expressed deep sorrow, saying, “Many of us women leaders stand on the shoulders of Mama Phoebe Asiyo. We walk a path that she opened when it was difficult for women to walk that path. It is a huge loss and we stand with the family during this very trying time.”

Phoebe Asiyo’s legacy includes not just her service as Karachuonyo MP but also her dedication to human rights, social justice, and national development. She was known for her fearless advocacy for women’s inclusion in leadership, education, and governance.

Throughout her life, she remained committed to mentorship, especially of younger women leaders, and continued to speak out on matters affecting the nation and women’s rights even after retiring from active politics.

Her contributions went beyond the political sphere — she was also involved in community development and peacebuilding efforts. Many remember her as a voice of reason, compassion, and strength, who helped shape modern Kenyan democracy.

Phoebe Asiyo’s journey into leadership began during the early days of Kenya’s independence. At a time when very few women occupied public office, she broke barriers and inspired generations of women to follow in her footsteps. Her courage and leadership opened the door for many women who are now active in both county and national government.

Her death marks the end of an era, but her legacy lives on in the countless lives she touched and in the continued progress of women in Kenyan politics.

As the country mourns her passing, plans for her memorial and burial are expected to be announced by the family in due course.
