The main suspect linked to the killing of two patients inside a Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) ward has been arrested. This comes after the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) ordered further investigations to support the case before prosecution.
According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), a case file had initially been submitted to the ODPP for action following the double homicide. However, the ODPP found the evidence insufficient and instructed the investigating officer to carry out additional inquiries to strengthen the case.
The arrest marks a major step in the investigation of the shocking incident that occurred within the KNH premises, where two patients were found dead under unclear circumstances. The case has raised serious concerns about security and patient safety in public hospitals.
The DCI did not reveal the identity of the suspect or give details about how or where the arrest took place. It is also unclear whether the suspect is a hospital staff member, a fellow patient, or someone with access to the hospital’s wards.
“Following the incident, a case file was compiled and submitted to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP). However, after review, the ODPP directed the Investigating Officer to conduct further inquiries to strengthen the prosecution’s case,” the DCI stated.
The arrest now sets the stage for the ODPP to possibly press charges, depending on the outcome of the fresh investigations. Authorities have not confirmed whether the new findings include witness statements, forensic evidence, or surveillance footage.
The killings have drawn public attention due to the rare nature of such violent crimes happening inside a hospital ward. Kenyatta National Hospital, being the largest referral hospital in the country, is expected to have high security standards to protect patients.
As the investigation progresses, many are waiting to see how the case will unfold and whether it will lead to a conviction. The KNH management has not released a public statement regarding the arrest or whether internal measures have been taken to improve safety in its wards.
More updates are expected as investigators complete the fresh inquiries ordered by the ODPP.
