In a surprising move, former US Vice-President and lifelong Republican Dick Cheney has confirmed his support for Democratic candidate Kamala Harris in the upcoming presidential election. Cheney, who served under President George W. Bush, issued a strongly worded statement condemning current Republican candidate Donald Trump, calling him the "greatest threat to our republic" the country has ever faced.
Cheney's statement follows remarks made by his daughter, Liz Cheney, a former Republican lawmaker, who revealed her father's plans to back Harris. Cheney expressed deep concern about Trump’s attempts to overturn the 2020 election results, saying, “He [Trump] tried to steal the last election using lies and violence to keep himself in power after the voters had rejected him. He can never be trusted with power again."
In his statement, Cheney stressed the importance of prioritizing country over partisanship, noting, “As citizens, we each have a duty to put country above partisanship to defend our constitution. That is why I will be casting my vote for Vice-President Kamala Harris.”
The Harris campaign welcomed Cheney’s endorsement, with campaign chair Jen O'Malley Dillon praising Cheney’s courage to prioritize the nation’s well-being. Cheney’s endorsement adds him to the growing list of Republicans distancing themselves from Trump’s candidacy.
Liz Cheney, an outspoken Trump critic, also endorsed Harris. She was a member of the House select committee investigating the January 6 Capitol riots and was one of the 10 Republicans who voted to impeach Trump. Her opposition to Trump ultimately cost her a re-election bid in 2022 when she lost her congressional seat to a Trump-backed challenger.
In response to Cheney’s endorsement, Trump lashed out on social media, calling Cheney an "irrelevant RINO" (Republican in name only) and the "King of Endless, Nonsensical Wars," referencing Cheney's role in the Iraq War.
