In recent operations across Nigeria, the country’s armed forces have ramped up counter-terrorism and counter-insurgency efforts, dealing significant blows to various terrorist groups. According to Defense representative Buba, the troops recovered an extensive cache of weapons, including 241 assorted firearms and over 3,000 rounds of ammunition, thwarting potential attacks and disrupting terrorist supply lines.
The recovered weapons include 141 AK47 rifles, one PKT machine gun, two FN rifles, 17 fabricated rifles, and 26 dane guns, along with 42 AK47 magazines. The ammunition cache included 2,016 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, 970 rounds of 7.62mm NATO rounds, 33 rounds of 7.62x54mm, 76 rounds of 9mm ammo, and 113 live cartridges. These successful recoveries highlight the effectiveness of the ongoing military strategy.
Buba credited the accomplishments to the armed forces’ evolving tactics, allowing them to counteract the shifting threats presented by insurgent groups. “Troops have denied these terrorists from accomplishing their strategic objectives,” he stated, noting that innovative operational approaches have been essential in maintaining flexibility and operational success across multiple regions.
In Nigeria’s North East, Operation Hadin Kai successfully neutralized 43 terrorists, arrested 27 suspects, and rescued 25 hostages who were being held by insurgent groups. Additionally, 27 terrorists surrendered to the armed forces, including two adult males, 11 adult females, and 14 children. These surrenders signal the weakening hold of terrorist networks over their members and territories.
Further south, in the North Central region, the troops under Operations Safe Haven and Whirl Stroke neutralized 21 violent extremists, apprehended 61 suspects, and rescued 24 kidnapped individuals. During these missions, a large cache of weapons was also recovered.
In the North West, Operation Hadarin Daji made substantial progress, with 62 terrorists neutralized, 29 individuals arrested, and nine hostages freed. The region saw an impressive seizure of arms that could have been used to fuel further violence.
The South East region saw a targeted operation under Operation UDO KA, which led to the capture of a key IPOB terrorist leader and founder of the Eastern Security Network (ESN), Pius Iguh, in Imo State. Another significant arrest was made in Abia, where troops detained Emmanuel Onwugu, a known IPOB commander, following a raid by troops at FOB Amaruku.
In related operations, combined security forces apprehended a notorious cult leader, Ifeanyi Rock, further bolstering peace efforts. The swift actions taken by Nigerian forces demonstrate the dedication and resolve of the troops to restore stability across the nation, removing threats from insurgent and criminal groups to safeguard communities.
These achievements underscore the Nigerian armed forces’ commitment to ongoing counter-terrorism measures, as they continue to refine and adapt their approach to meet the security needs of the nation.
