Gunmen have killed seven security operatives, including two unarmed civilians, in Ihiala, Anambra State, sparking widespread fear. Tochukwu Ikenga, spokesperson for the state police command, confirmed the attack in a statement, revealing it occurred early Monday morning.
The state commissioner of police, Nnaghe Itam, has ordered a manhunt for the attackers. He also extended his condolences to the victims' families, assuring the public that efforts are underway to bring the perpetrators to justice.
“The CP extends his condolences to the families of those whose loved ones were involved in the gunmen attack,” Ikenga said. “The Joint Security Team rescued one of the victims, who is currently responding to treatment in a hospital.”
Ikenga detailed that the attackers opened fire at a location where preparations were underway for a burial ceremony scheduled for January 2, 2025. In their escape, the gunmen also shot two security operatives stationed near the local government headquarters by the express road.
Commissioner Itam visited the crime scene for an on-the-spot assessment and engaged eyewitnesses to gather more information. He vowed to ensure the attackers are apprehended and face justice for their actions.
This incident adds to a troubling pattern of gun violence in Anambra State. On December 24, Justice Azuka, a member of the Anambra State House of Assembly representing Onitsha North constituency, was abducted by unidentified gunmen along Ugwunapampa Road while heading home for Christmas.
Two days later, on December 26, unknown assailants killed Tobias Chukwujekwu Okonkwo, a Catholic priest from the Nnewi Diocese. According to Raphael Ezeogu, the diocesan chancellor, the priest was shot along the Onitsha-Owerri expressway in Ihiala.
In November, gunmen reportedly killed four people in Ukpo, Dunukofia Local Government Area, and Abatete in Idemili North LGA while enforcing a sit-at-home order.
The latest attack underscores the persistent security challenges in Anambra, with authorities facing mounting pressure to restore peace and safety in the state.
