The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC Ltd) has confirmed that a fire at its Buguma wellhead 008, operated by NNPC Eighteen Operating Ltd (NEOL), was caused by vandals attempting to steal crude oil. The fire also caused significant damage to the well’s back pressure valve, according to the company's statement.
Olufemi Soneye, NNPC Ltd's chief corporate communications officer, explained that the vandals tried to tamper with the wellhead’s Christmas tree in an effort to steal oil, which led to the destructive fire. This act of sabotage is part of a growing pattern of attacks on wellheads in the region.
Since March 2023, crude oil theft in the area has been a persistent problem. Criminals have increasingly resorted to violent tactics, including the use of dynamite to damage infrastructure and access oil illegally. These ongoing thefts have raised concerns about the safety of oil operations in the region.
In response to the incident, NNPC Ltd emphasized its commitment to addressing the issue of oil theft and fires. The company is working closely with security agencies to prevent further vandalism and mitigate the financial impact of these criminal activities on the country’s economy.
Soneye also mentioned that NNPC Ltd is focused on supporting the communities affected by these attacks. The company has pledged to continue relief efforts to help those who suffer from the consequences of these destructive actions. Despite the challenges, NNPC Ltd remains dedicated to combating oil theft and its harmful effects on both the company and the nation as a whole.
