A SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule docked with the International Space Station (ISS) early Sunday, delivering four new astronauts and clearing the way for two long-stranded Starliner astronauts to finally return home after nearly 300 days in space.
The capsule, launched Friday from the Kennedy Space Center, approached the ISS from below, passing 1,300 feet underneath before positioning itself 720 feet ahead of the station. It then moved in for docking at the Harmony module’s forward port at 12:04 a.m. EDT. After securing an airtight seal, the crew opened the hatch at 1:35 a.m. and floated into the station.
Crew 10 is led by commander Anne McClain, an Army colonel and former combat helicopter pilot. She described the journey as an "amazing experience," saying the moment they first saw the space station was overwhelming. "The ride up on the Falcon 9 and orbiting Earth these past few days have been incredible," she added.
Her co-pilot, Air Force major Nichole Ayers, also shared her excitement. "As a rookie, this was one of the coolest things I’ve ever done. I can’t wait to get to work up here," she said. The team also includes Japanese astronaut Takuya Onishi and Russian cosmonaut Kirill Peskov, both experienced commercial pilots.
They are replacing Crew 9 members Nick Hague, Russian cosmonaut Alexander Gorbunov, and Boeing Starliner astronauts Barry "Butch" Wilmore and Sunita Williams. Wilmore and Williams were originally supposed to stay for only eight days after arriving last June on Boeing’s first piloted Starliner test flight. However, propulsion system issues with their spacecraft forced them to remain at the ISS for nearly 10 months while NASA decided how to bring them home safely.
With Crew 10 now aboard, Hague, Gorbunov, Wilmore, and Williams will spend the next week training their replacements before departing for Earth. They are set to splash down in the Gulf of Mexico near Florida.
By the time they land, Wilmore and Williams will have spent almost 290 days in space. Williams’ total time in space across multiple missions will bring her to around 570 days, making her the second most experienced U.S. astronaut, behind Peggy Whitson, who holds the record with 675 days.
NASA and SpaceX officials hailed the mission as a success, emphasizing the importance of reliable transport to and from the ISS.
