EFCC Arrests Edo Official Kelly Okungbowa Over Naira Abuse

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested Kelly Okungbowa, also known as Ebo Stone, over allegations of naira abuse. Okungbowa, who was the coordinator of the Edo State Public Safety Response Team (PSRT), was taken into custody on Monday after a viral video showed him spraying minted naira notes on two strippers at a private party.

Following the video's circulation, the Edo state government suspended Okungbowa from his role. The EFCC confirmed his arrest in a statement, saying he was seen “spraying and mutilating the naira at a bar on March 9, 2025.”

EFCC’s Crackdown on Naira Abuse

The arrest is part of a broader effort by the EFCC to enforce regulations against the abuse of the national currency. Nigerian laws prohibit the spraying, defacing, or mutilation of naira notes, with offenders facing fines or jail time. The EFCC has recently intensified its crackdown, targeting individuals seen violating these laws in viral videos.

In Okungbowa’s case, the video sparked widespread reactions, with many calling for action against public officials engaging in such acts. His suspension by the Edo state government was seen as a move to distance the administration from the controversy.

Possible Legal Consequences

Okungbowa now faces possible prosecution under laws governing currency abuse. If found guilty, he could face penalties, including a fine or imprisonment. The EFCC has warned that more arrests may follow as it continues investigating similar cases.

The incident has once again highlighted the EFCC’s commitment to curbing financial crimes, including the improper handling of Nigeria’s currency. It also serves as a warning to public officials and individuals who engage in naira abuse, especially in social settings where such actions are often recorded and shared online.

With his arrest and suspension, Okungbowa’s future in public service remains uncertain, and many will be watching closely to see how the case unfolds.
