R. Kelly Hospitalized After Alleged Overdose and Murder Plot

R. Kelly was hospitalized after what his lawyer describes as a dangerous medication overdose and an alleged murder plot involving federal prison staff. According to court filings and a statement given to CBS News, the R&B singer collapsed in his prison cell and was rushed to Duke University Hospital after taking medicine that had been administered by prison staff.

Kelly’s attorney, Beau Brindley, filed an emergency motion Monday seeking to move him from a North Carolina prison to home detention. Brindley claims the Bureau of Prisons is responsible for putting Kelly’s life at risk, stating, “Mr. Kelly's life is in danger and the threat comes from Bureau of Prisons officers whose duty is to protect him.”

The lawyer further alleges that federal officials are trying to kill Kelly to hide misconduct from the investigation into his case. While the Bureau of Prisons declined to comment on the claims, citing privacy and safety concerns, they acknowledged they do not speak on individual inmates’ health or pending litigation.

Court records reveal Kelly was moved to solitary confinement earlier in June. Brindley says his client had his own prescribed medications for anxiety and sleep, but prison staff gave him additional medicine and instructed him to take it. Kelly reportedly became dizzy, saw black spots, collapsed, and lost consciousness after taking the medication.

Doctors at the hospital allegedly told Kelly he had been given an overdose. While receiving care, he also showed medical staff his swollen leg—an issue he had been trying to get treated. A scan revealed multiple blood clots in both legs and his lungs. Doctors reportedly recommended a seven-day hospital stay and scheduled surgery.

However, before treatment could proceed, Brindley claims officers removed Kelly from the hospital against doctors’ advice. “He could die from this condition, and they are letting it happen,” the attorney warned.

This is not the first time Brindley has raised safety concerns. Earlier this month, he alleged that a white supremacist had been recruited by prison officials to kill Kelly.

R. Kelly is currently serving a 30-year sentence for racketeering and sex trafficking, along with a 20-year sentence for child pornography. Most of the time will be served concurrently.
