Harambee Stars Promised Sh1 Billion for Winning CHAN Title

Harambee Stars now have a record Sh1 billion cash incentive to win the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) after former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko pledged Sh400 million to the team if they bring the trophy home.

Sonko’s announcement came shortly after President William Ruto visited the national squad at their training camp ahead of their CHAN opener against DR Congo on Sunday, August 3, at Kasarani Stadium in Nairobi. The President had earlier pledged Sh600 million in rewards if the team wins the tournament.

“The President has done a good gesture; it will motivate the players,” Sonko said. “I am not in competition with the President, but mine will be just to support his gesture. I want our team to clinch the trophy. If they do that, I will give them Sh400 million. Boys, you have Sh1 billion if you win.”

Sonko, known for his flamboyant generosity, said that in the past he would reward players for every goal, but he has since realized that such offers can encourage selfish play. “Other times I used to reward players for every goal scored. But that at some point can bring individualism in the team,” he explained.

President Ruto, on his part, has outlined a clear financial reward structure. Every player will receive Sh1 million for each match won and Sh500,000 for every draw. He also raised the initial Sh200 million reward for winning the tournament to Sh600 million.

“I want us to make a deal. For every game you win, every player gets Sh1 million. For every game you draw, every player gets Sh500,000,” Ruto told the players. “We had agreed on Sh200 million for making it to the finals. But I make it Sh600 million if you win the competition.”

These unprecedented incentives have generated massive excitement and national pride, as Harambee Stars gear up for their CHAN campaign on home soil. The financial support is expected to boost morale and give the players added motivation to make history in the continental tournament.

If they go all the way, this CHAN campaign could not only bring sporting glory but also the highest-ever reward in Kenyan football history.
