Trump Declares ‘War Is Over’ as Israel Awaits Hostage Release

A major turning point in the Gaza conflict is expected today as a ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas reaches its most crucial stage, with the final release of hostages set to take place by noon local time (10:00 BST).

According to officials, Hamas is scheduled to release the remaining 48 hostages still held in Gaza. Of these, 20 are believed to be alive and will receive immediate medical attention before being reunited with their families. The bodies of 28 others are expected to be returned to Israel later today.

The agreement, brokered by the United States, Egypt, and Qatar, has been hailed as a diplomatic breakthrough following months of devastating conflict. In response, Israel will release 250 Palestinian prisoners, including several serving life sentences. Additionally, more than 1,700 detainees held without formal charges — among them nearly two dozen children — will also be freed as part of the wider truce arrangement.

As the ceasefire takes effect, U.S. President Donald Trump is visiting Israel in what is being described as a historic moment for the region. He is scheduled to address Israel’s parliament before traveling to Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, where he will host a peace summit alongside at least 20 world leaders.

Israel’s President Isaac Herzog welcomed Trump’s visit, saying he would be received by “masses of Israelis with gratitude and friendship.” Many in Israel have credited Trump for playing a decisive role in securing the ceasefire and pushing for the release of hostages.

Meanwhile, humanitarian efforts are intensifying in Gaza. Convoys of aid trucks have begun crossing the border, bringing much-needed supplies to civilians who have been displaced by Israel’s military offensive. Thousands of Palestinians, forced to move south during the fighting, are now making their way back north — only to find their homes and neighborhoods in ruins.

Today’s developments mark a significant moment of hope after months of bloodshed. However, with deep mistrust between the two sides and a long road to recovery ahead, the success of this ceasefire — and the peace talks to follow — remains uncertain.
