Baringo County Receives 290,000 Treated Mosquito Nets to Combat Malaria

Residents of Baringo County have received 290,000 insecticide-treated mosquito nets from the Kenya Medical Supplies Authority (KEMSA) through funding from the Global Fund. This distribution is part of a nationwide malaria control initiative targeting 22 counties prone to the disease, including Nyanza and the Coast regions.

The campaign is part of KEMSA’s larger mission to distribute 10.9 million mosquito nets across high-risk counties to help curb malaria. The Global Fund’s program, implemented under the National Malaria Control Program (NMCP) and in partnership with the President’s Malaria Initiative, focuses on distributing nets in malaria-endemic areas.

KEMSA representative Ejersa, who led the distribution in Nakuru, praised the authority’s logistical efficiency in reaching even the most remote areas. "Malaria remains a significant health burden in Kenya. This intervention will save lives, and we are committed to ensuring these nets reach every household," he said.

The recent effort focused on Eldama Ravine, Mogotio, and Baringo South sub-counties, which received 95,000, 72,000, and 80,000 nets, respectively.

Deputy Governor Felix Maiyo of Baringo County, speaking at the flagging-off event in Muserechi dispensary, emphasized the importance of using the nets to prevent the costly treatment of malaria. "We call on our communities to use these nets as directed to prevent malaria, which remains a significant health challenge," he stated.

Mary Wambui, a local resident, expressed relief and optimism about the impact of the nets on her family’s health, citing the high cost of mosquito nets and their importance in preventing malaria in the region.

The initiative is part of a broader national effort, with similar distributions planned for counties such as Kirinyaga, Turkana, West Pokot, Narok, and Trans Nzoia. Western Kenya and coastal areas, also prone to mosquito-borne diseases, have benefited from similar initiatives in recent months.
