President Ruto Hails Hustler Fund’s Transparency, Urges Swift E-Procurement Law to Tackle Corruption

President William Ruto has lauded the Hustler Fund for its transparent, technology-driven loan processing and called on Members of Parliament to expedite the e-procurement law to combat corruption effectively.

During the launch of the Fifth National Action Plan on the Open Government Partnership in Nairobi, President Ruto underscored the importance of adopting technology as a vital tool in the fight against graft. He highlighted that the Hustler Fund supports two million Kenyans daily through a technology-based platform. “It is the single government project that has no corruption because technology has provided the framework to make sure we insulate it from graft,” Ruto explained.

The President emphasized the transformative role of technology in enhancing public services and committed to further investments aimed at creating more job opportunities for the youth. He pointed out that digitization has already yielded positive outcomes, with an increasing number of Kenyans gaining access to remote work opportunities.

In a significant move to bolster Kenya’s technological presence globally, Ruto announced his departure to Germany the following day to sign a labor agreement. This agreement is designed to enable Kenyans to secure online jobs, thereby strengthening the country’s footprint in the global tech landscape.

Earlier this year, the Kenyan government unveiled a five-year plan to install 100,000 kilometers of fiber optic infrastructure across the nation. By June 2024, over 10,200 kilometers of fiber optic cables had been laid in all 47 counties. This ambitious project leverages Kenya Power’s existing electricity transmission lines, expanding the National Optic Fibre Backbone Infrastructure (NOFBI) to reach 74,000 transformers nationwide. The extended network will provide fiber connections to homes, businesses, and institutions.

This strategic approach not only reduces costs and shortens implementation times but also simplifies maintenance. By utilizing existing infrastructure, the government aims to position Kenya as a regional technology hub, capable of attracting investments and fostering innovation.

President Ruto reiterated the government’s commitment to prioritizing technological innovation as a cornerstone for economic growth and development. The goal is to bridge the digital divide, ensuring that all Kenyans have access to modern technology and its benefits. By doing so, Kenya aims to lead the way in the global digital economy, creating a more inclusive and prosperous society for its citizens.

The President’s remarks reflect a broader vision of integrating technology into governance and economic strategies to build a transparent, efficient, and forward-looking Kenya. As the country continues to invest in its digital infrastructure and promote tech-driven initiatives, it sets the stage for sustained growth and resilience in the face of global challenges.
