Ghana has recorded 34,000 new HIV infections between January and the third quarter of 2024, according to recent data shared by health officials. This concerning statistic was revealed by Dr. Ayisi at the launch of the 2024 World AIDS Day, which featured a candlelight procession to honor those who have lost their lives to AIDS. The event aimed to shed light on the urgency of combating HIV and recommitting to prevention and treatment efforts.
World AIDS Day, observed globally on December 1 each year, serves as a powerful reminder for nations to renew their efforts in preventing HIV and ensuring people living with the virus receive necessary support. This year’s theme, "Take the Rights Path," emphasizes the importance of protecting human rights as part of the strategy to eliminate HIV.
Dr. Ayisi highlighted that the high number of infections reported in the first nine months of 2024 is a major setback to Ghana’s target of eradicating HIV by 2030. He stressed the critical need for preventive measures, urging individuals to use condoms consistently and correctly. He also advised people to remain faithful to their partners or practice abstinence to reduce the risk of spreading the virus and other sexually transmitted infections.
“The safest way to protect each other is to be faithful to your partner. Reduce new infections by practising responsible behaviour or abstaining from sexual activities,” Dr. Ayisi stated, reinforcing the call for personal responsibility in stopping the spread of HIV.
Dr. Atuahene Kyeremeh, Director-General of the Ghana AIDS Commission, reiterated the commission's commitment to working closely with various partners to reach the shared goal of ending HIV by 2030. He encouraged Ghanaians to take advantage of the free treatment services available, which can effectively suppress the virus, and underscored the importance of getting tested and seeking treatment if needed.
To further mark World AIDS Day, the Ghana AIDS Commission has organized a major event in Accra on December 2, 2024. This gathering, known as a grand durbar, will bring together representatives from the Ministry of Health, UNAIDS, the Ghana Health Service, and the National Association of Persons Living with HIV (NAP+). Other key stakeholders will also be present to show their support for continued efforts in combating HIV.
