A cholera outbreak in Kanam Local Government Area (LGA) of Plateau State has claimed one life and hospitalized about 60 others. The outbreak, initially reported in Ngyang, Kwalmiya, Banak, and Bakin Kogi, has since spread to Dengi, the LGA headquarters.
Kanam LGA Chairman, Ayuba Musa, confirmed the incident through his spokesperson, Mazadu Ali. In a statement, he assured residents that the local government is taking urgent steps to address the outbreak and support affected individuals.
Medical supplies and equipment have been dispatched to key healthcare facilities, including the General Hospital and Primary Health Care Centre in Dengi. To ease the burden on affected families, the local government has covered all medical bills for cholera patients, whether they are being treated in public or private hospitals.
In addition to providing medical support, the council has launched a comprehensive public health campaign to educate residents on cholera prevention. The campaign includes interactive sessions aimed at promoting proper sanitation practices and emphasizing the importance of safe drinking water to curb the disease’s spread.
The outbreak has caused widespread concern in the affected communities, as cholera is highly contagious and can quickly lead to severe dehydration or death if not treated promptly. Health officials are working tirelessly to contain the situation and prevent further infections.
Kanam LGA authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant and adhere to preventive measures such as boiling water before drinking, maintaining proper hygiene, and avoiding open defecation. These practices, they emphasize, are crucial to stopping the spread of cholera.
This outbreak underscores the urgent need for improved public health infrastructure and sanitation in vulnerable communities. While the local government’s swift response is commendable, long-term strategies are essential to prevent recurring outbreaks.
The Kanam cholera outbreak highlights the importance of early detection, community awareness, and coordinated efforts to address public health emergencies. Residents and stakeholders are encouraged to cooperate fully with health authorities as they work to bring the outbreak under control.
