Isak Andic, the Spanish businessman and founder of the global fashion chain Mango, tragically passed away at the age of 71. According to a statement from Mango’s CEO, Toni Ruiz, Andic died in an accident on Saturday while exploring caves near Barcelona. The company expressed deep sorrow over his death, describing his loss as a significant void.
The statement read, “His departure leaves a huge void, but all of us are, in some way, his legacy and the testimony of his achievements.” It went on to say, “It is up to us… to ensure that Mango continues to be the project that Isak aspired to and of which he would feel proud.”
Andic, who had served as Mango’s non-executive chairman, tragically fell down a ravine over 320 feet deep in the Collbató caves of Salnitre while hiking in a mountain range. The company expressed its condolences to his family during this difficult time.
Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez also expressed his grief over Andic’s death on social media. He wrote: “All my affection, and recognition for your great work and business vision, which has turned this Spanish brand into a world reference in fashion.”
Born in Istanbul, Turkey, to a Sephardic Jewish family in October 1953, Andic moved to Barcelona in 1969. He and his brother, Nahman, began their entrepreneurial journey by selling hand-embroidered T-shirts and clogs imported from Turkey. In 1984, they co-founded Mango in Barcelona, which quickly grew into one of the largest fashion chains in the world, with nearly 3,000 stores across 120 countries. Forbes estimated Andic’s net worth at $4.5 billion (£3.6 billion).
Andic was divorced from Neus Raig Tarragó, with whom he had three children. His legacy as a pioneering figure in the fashion industry will continue to impact Mango and the business world for years to come.
