Delta Offers $30,000 to Passengers After Toronto Plane Crash

Delta Airlines has announced it will offer $30,000 to each passenger aboard a flight that crash-landed in Toronto this week, flipping upside down on the runway.

The incident involved Delta Flight 4819, which was traveling from Minneapolis and encountered difficulties while landing at Toronto Pearson International Airport on Monday. The aircraft made a rough landing, rolled over, and came to a stop on its belly with its right wing severely damaged.

Despite the severity of the crash, all 80 people on board—76 passengers and four crew members—survived. According to Delta, 21 passengers were taken to hospitals, but by Wednesday morning, only one remained under medical care. No passengers sustained life-threatening injuries.

Delta confirmed on Wednesday that it had contacted passengers with the $30,000 offer. A company spokesperson clarified that the payment comes with “no strings attached” and does not affect passengers’ legal rights to seek further compensation.

While the cause of the crash is still under investigation, Delta CEO Ed Bastian stated in an interview with CBS that the flight was operated by an experienced crew. However, no further details have been provided about what led to the accident.

Meanwhile, some passengers are already exploring legal options. Rochon Genova, a Canadian law firm, has confirmed that it is representing some of the affected travelers.

Under international aviation treaties, U.S. airlines must make advance payments to passengers after an accident if the airline determines they need immediate financial assistance. In cases of death, the initial payment must exceed $20,000. For injuries, the airline decides the amount based on individual circumstances. Delta’s compensation offer aligns with these regulations.

As investigations continue, passengers will have to decide whether to accept the payment or pursue further claims. The airline has assured full cooperation with authorities and emphasized its commitment to passenger safety.
