Nigeria has reached a new milestone in power generation, hitting 5,543.20 megawatts (MW) in 2025, according to a statement from the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN). This is the highest power output recorded so far this year.
TCN’s General Manager for Public Affairs, Mrs. Ndidi Mbah, announced the achievement in a statement released in Abuja on Wednesday night. She confirmed that the new record was set on Friday, February 14, 2025, at exactly 11:00 p.m.
This new peak generation surpasses the previous record of 5,478.73 MW, which was achieved just a day earlier, on Thursday, February 13, 2025. According to TCN, this increase demonstrates progress in the country’s electricity supply.
In addition to the new peak generation, Nigeria also recorded its highest-ever Maximum Daily Energy of 125,159.48 megawatt-hours (MWH) on the same day. This figure exceeded the previous record of 121,674.88 MWH, which was set on February 7, 2025, by an additional 3,484.60 MWH.
TCN confirmed that all the power generated was successfully transmitted to distribution companies across the country. These companies are responsible for delivering electricity to homes and businesses nationwide.
The company credited this achievement to the ongoing efforts of President Bola Tinubu’s administration and the Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu. According to TCN, the government remains committed to improving power generation and ensuring stable electricity supply for Nigerians.
This development is a positive step for Nigeria’s electricity sector, which has long struggled with inadequate supply and frequent blackouts. While the increase in power generation is encouraging, experts believe further investments and upgrades in transmission and distribution infrastructure are necessary to sustain and expand electricity access.
With this new record, TCN says it will continue working on strengthening the transmission network to accommodate even higher power generation levels in the future. The company also urged power sector stakeholders to collaborate in addressing challenges affecting the industry.
As Nigeria aims for a more stable power supply, citizens and businesses will be looking forward to further improvements that can reduce power shortages and support economic growth.
