Former U.S. President Donald Trump has signed a new bill into law that officially criminalizes the distribution of “revenge porn,” including deepfake images shared without consent.
Speaking during a signing ceremony held in the White House Rose Garden, Trump highlighted the growing threat posed by artificial intelligence and its misuse in creating explicit content. He pointed out how women, in particular, have become frequent targets of online harassment through deepfake technology.
“With the rise of AI image generation, countless women have been harassed with deepfakes and other explicit images distributed against their will,” Trump said during the event.
The new law addresses the spread of non-consensual explicit images and videos, often referred to as "revenge porn." This is typically done by individuals seeking to embarrass or harm someone—usually an ex-partner—by releasing private content without their permission. The legislation also takes into account AI-generated material, which can manipulate images to falsely depict individuals in sexual or compromising situations.
The move to outlaw revenge porn comes in response to growing concerns over digital privacy and the rapid spread of deepfake technology. Advocates for victims’ rights have long pushed for stronger protections, arguing that existing laws have not kept pace with the dangers posed by manipulated content.
Under the new law, anyone found guilty of knowingly sharing intimate content without the subject’s consent can now face criminal charges. The law is designed to protect victims and hold offenders accountable, particularly in an era where damaging content can be created and shared in seconds.
The signing of the bill marks a significant step in regulating how emerging technologies like AI are used, particularly in cases that affect personal dignity and mental health. It also reflects increasing bipartisan support in the U.S. for laws that respond to digital threats, especially those that disproportionately affect women and minors.
The law is expected to provide relief to many victims who have struggled to seek justice under outdated legal frameworks.
