A mass shooting at a popular bar in South Carolina left four people dead and at least 20 others injured early Sunday morning, authorities said. The attack happened at Willie's Bar and Grill on St. Helena Island, a venue known for its Gullah-inspired cuisine and vibrant weekend gatherings.
According to the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office, hundreds of people were inside the bar when gunfire suddenly erupted, causing panic as patrons and staff fled for safety. Witnesses reported chaotic scenes, with several victims and bystanders running to nearby businesses to seek help.
Deputies responding to emergency calls found multiple people suffering from gunshot wounds both inside and outside the establishment. Four victims were pronounced dead at the scene, while at least 20 others were injured. Officials confirmed that four of the wounded were in critical condition and receiving treatment at local hospitals.
The sheriff’s office said investigators are still piecing together what happened and have not yet identified any suspects. It remains unclear whether the shooting was a targeted attack or a random act of violence. “The investigation is ongoing,” the sheriff’s office said, adding that officers are interviewing witnesses and reviewing surveillance footage from nearby areas.
The tragedy has left the small coastal community in shock. Representative Nancy Mace of South Carolina expressed grief and frustration over the loss of life, writing on X (formerly Twitter): “COMPLETELY HEARTBROKEN to learn about the devastating shooting in Beaufort County. Our prayers are with the victims, their families, and everyone impacted by this horrific act of violence.”
Willie’s Bar and Grill, where the incident occurred, is popular among locals and tourists for its focus on Gullah Geechee culture — a heritage linked to descendants of enslaved Africans along the southeastern U.S. coast. The restaurant has not yet issued a public statement.
As investigators continue their search for those responsible, residents are mourning the victims and calling for stronger efforts to address gun violence in South Carolina. The sheriff’s office urged anyone with information about the shooting to come forward and assist in the investigation.
