Man Accused of Killing GSU Officer at State House Detained for 14 Days

A Nairobi court has ordered the detention of Kimunye Musyimi, the man accused of killing a General Service Unit (GSU) officer outside State House, for 14 days to allow police to complete investigations into the fatal attack.

Musyimi, 56, from Makueni County, appeared before the Kibera Law Courts on Tuesday, where detectives requested more time to conclude their probe. According to preliminary reports, the suspect allegedly travelled from Makueni to Nairobi on Sunday night before carrying out the attack the following morning.

In court, Musyimi appeared frail and in visible pain. He limped into the courtroom, assisted by police officers, and was dressed in a white hoodie and brown trousers. He leaned heavily on one leg, with the other bare, missing both a shoe and sock. The court directed that he be taken to Mbagathi Hospital for medical treatment.

Police said the attack occurred at about 8:10 a.m. on Monday near State House Gate D along Dennis Pritt Road, a checkpoint open to members of the public. The suspect, armed with a bow and arrows, reportedly ignored multiple commands to surrender before firing an arrow that struck Police Constable Ramadhan Mattanka in the ribs.

Mattanka, who was attached to the GSU’s G Company, was rushed to Kenyatta National Hospital but died while receiving treatment. An autopsy conducted the following day revealed that he died from severe bleeding after the arrow pierced through his ribs, left lung, and heart.

The National Police Service (NPS) condemned the attack, calling it a “heinous act,” and commended officers at the scene for their swift response, which prevented further casualties. Police arrested Musyimi immediately after the attack. During questioning, he allegedly claimed that “Satan had sent him” to harm the officer.

Investigators are exploring whether the suspect and the slain officer knew each other. CCTV footage reportedly captured a 17-minute exchange between them before the incident, raising suspicions that the attack may have been personal.

Police also said Musyimi had hidden the bow and arrows inside a large sack and approached the gate posing as a street family member. He was turned away, but moments later, when officers were distracted by another vehicle, he launched the deadly assault.

The motive for the attack remains unclear as investigations continue.
