Former US Vice President Dick Cheney Dies at Age 84

Former United States Vice President Dick Cheney has died at the age of 84. According to a family statement, Cheney passed away on Tuesday due to complications related to pneumonia and heart disease.

“For decades, Dick Cheney served our nation — as White House chief of staff, Wyoming’s congressman, secretary of defense, and vice-president of the United States,” the family said. “He was a great and good man who taught his children and grandchildren to love our country, and to live lives of courage, honor, love, kindness, and fly fishing.”

Cheney served as vice president under President George W. Bush from 2001 to 2009, where he played a key role in shaping U.S. foreign and security policy after the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. He became one of the most influential figures in the Bush administration and a central architect of the so-called “war on terror.”

A strong advocate for the 2003 U.S. invasion of Iraq, Cheney’s legacy remains one of the most debated in modern American politics. Supporters praised him for his commitment to national security and decisive leadership, while critics accused him of pushing policies that led to prolonged wars and human rights controversies.

Before becoming vice president, Cheney served as U.S. Secretary of Defense under President George H. W. Bush from 1989 to 1993. In that role, he oversaw the U.S.-led coalition during the Gulf War, which successfully liberated Kuwait from Iraqi occupation.

His public service career began decades earlier, including serving as White House chief of staff under President Gerald Ford in the 1970s and representing Wyoming in Congress for ten years. Beyond politics, Cheney also built a prominent private-sector career, notably as chairman and CEO of Halliburton, one of the world’s largest oilfield service companies.

Known for his conservative views, Cheney made headlines in 2024 when he broke party lines to endorse Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris.

A lifelong outdoorsman, Cheney enjoyed hunting and fishing, though he famously attracted media attention in 2006 after accidentally shooting a friend during a quail hunting trip in Texas.

He is survived by his wife, Lynne Cheney, and their two daughters.
