Jospong Rice Launch Boosts Ghana’s Push for Local Food Security

The Asian African Consortium (AAC), part of the Jospong Group, has introduced Jospong Rice, a new locally grown and processed rice aimed at reducing Ghana’s dependence on imports. Launched at Agrifest 2024 in Accra, the initiative aligns with the government’s goal of promoting food security and supporting the economy through import substitution.

Minister of Food and Agriculture, Mr. Bryan Acheampong, described Jospong Rice as “authentic Ghanaian rice,” praising its quality and the role it plays in boosting local agriculture. The rice is grown and processed to meet international standards, offering consumers a nutritious and delicious alternative to imported products.

Ghana currently spends over GHC6.8 billion (approximately $560 million) annually on rice imports. With rising consumption—currently about 45 kilograms per person each year—the country faces mounting financial pressure to meet demand. Jospong Rice is positioned as a key solution to this challenge, aiming to reduce import costs while strengthening the agricultural sector.

AAC Chief Executive emphasized that the launch of Jospong Rice is a significant step toward ensuring Ghana’s food security. By investing in high-quality seeds, modern production technologies, and farmer training, AAC is enhancing local rice production and market competitiveness. The initiative also fosters sustainable agricultural practices, making Ghana’s rice industry more climate-resilient.

Agrifest 2024, themed “Building Climate-Resilient Agriculture for Sustainable Food Security,” served as a platform to showcase AAC’s contributions to agricultural innovation. The consortium displayed advanced farming equipment and engaged with stakeholders, including agrochemical suppliers, financial institutions, and government agencies, to build strategic partnerships.

In 2023, AAC collaborated with major rice industry players in Thailand and Ghana to launch an integrated rice farming project. This partnership is part of the broader effort to scale up local rice production, aligning with the government’s objective of reducing imports and boosting the economy.

The introduction of Jospong Rice reflects AAC’s commitment to transforming Ghana’s agricultural landscape. By supporting local farmers and investing in sustainable practices, AAC is helping to secure the country’s food future and lessen its reliance on foreign rice imports. This initiative not only addresses Ghana’s immediate food security needs but also strengthens its economic resilience in the long term.
