Ghana’s President, Nana Akufo-Addo, has appointed Herbert Krapa as the substantive Minister for Energy, effective 19th November 2024. Krapa, who had been serving as the Minister of State at the Energy Ministry for the past five months, takes on the full role following his appointment.
Before this new role, Krapa was the Deputy Minister for Energy and also served as the Board Chairman of the Electricity Company of Ghana. President Akufo-Addo praised Krapa’s contributions, noting that he had significantly helped stabilize and advance Ghana’s energy sector.
Herbert Krapa is an experienced governance and legal expert. He previously acted as the government’s spokesperson on Governance and Legal Affairs at the Ministry of Information until December 2020. A qualified lawyer, Krapa was called to the Ghana Bar in 2017. He has expertise in Trade and Investment Law, Commercial Law, and Debt Restructuring.
Krapa has a solid academic background. He holds a Bachelor of Laws Degree from the University of Ghana and a Master of Laws from the London School of Economics and Political Science, where he specialized in International Finance, Secured Financing, International Commercial Arbitration, and Corporate Crime. Additionally, he earned a Master of Science Degree in Development Finance from the University of Ghana Business School and a Certificate in Human Rights Law from Fordham University in New York.
Krapa has also been involved in legal education as a lecturer at the University of Ghana School of Law, where his research focuses on legal philosophy and global constitutionalism. His professional memberships include the Ghana Bar Association, the Programme for African Leadership, and Criminal Justice Reform Ghana.
Krapa’s new role as Minister for Energy places him at the forefront of Ghana’s energy sector, and his vast legal and governance experience is expected to contribute to the sector's continued development.
