The Kogi State Police Command has confirmed the kidnapping of three family members of Malam Ahmed Ajobe, a former editor of Daily Trust. The victims, including Mr. Ajobe’s younger sister, Halimtu-Sadiya Tahir, were abducted on Thursday while traveling on the Ankpa-Adoka-Makurdi Road in Awo, Ankpa Local Government Area. They were returning from a market where they had purchased items for a prayer ceremony following the death of Ajobe’s mother.
According to the Kogi State Police Public Relations Officer, William Aya, the incident was reported to the police on Friday. He stated that the local Divisional Police Officer has deployed officers to search the area and work towards the victims’ rescue. Additionally, Police Commissioner Bethrand Onuoha has directed a specialized tactical team to reinforce the local police. Aya assured the public that every effort is being made to secure the safe release of the victims and to apprehend the perpetrators.
A family friend, speaking on the condition of anonymity, revealed that the kidnappers have contacted the family and are demanding a ransom of N50 million. The abduction occurred around 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, just days after the death of Mr. Ajobe’s mother, Malama Aishetu Tahir, who passed away on Sunday after a long illness. The victims were reportedly gathering supplies for the seven-day prayers traditionally held in honor of the deceased when they were attacked at gunpoint.
This incident highlights the persistent security challenges in Kogi State, particularly on the Ankpa-Adoka-Makurdi Road, a route notorious for its poor condition and frequent criminal activity. The police have urged community members to remain vigilant and provide any information that could assist in the rescue effort.
The ordeal has added to the grief of the Ajobe family, who are already mourning the loss of their matriarch. While the family awaits further developments, security operatives remain committed to securing the release of the abducted relatives and ensuring justice is served.
The situation continues to unfold, with the community and authorities working together to address this distressing incident.
