UPDF Leaders Urge Unity and Integrity in Fight Against Corruption

Lt Gen Sam Okiding, Uganda's Deputy Chief of Defence Forces, has urged newly promoted Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) officers to unite in combating corruption within the force. Speaking during a pipping ceremony at the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs (MODVA) Headquarters in Mbuya, he emphasized that corruption poses a significant threat to the integrity of the UPDF and the nation.

"Fighting corruption is a collective responsibility," Lt Gen Okiding stated. "If we don’t address it, it will destroy us, starting within the UPDF before spreading to the country and the region. Let us remove it—it is not good; it is letting us down." His remarks highlighted the importance of integrity and accountability among military officers.

The ceremony honored two Colonels promoted to Brigadier General and 17 Lieutenant Colonels promoted to Colonel. Lt Gen Okiding acknowledged the divine nature of their promotions and called on the officers to embrace their new roles with dedication. Quoting Isaiah 60:22, he reminded them that their advancements come with greater responsibilities. “I am confident and happy that you will handle these responsibilities well,” he said.

Brig Gen Paul Wanyera Namawa, Chief of Staff for the Special Forces Command, spoke on behalf of the promoted officers, expressing gratitude to President Yoweri Museveni and the Commander-in-Chief for their leadership. He reflected on the UPDF’s evolution into a professional force and the sacrifices of those who paved the way.

“This day reminds us of the legacy we inherit from the brave men and women who made immense sacrifices for this country,” Brig Gen Namawa said. “Leadership is not about authority but service to our country, families, and citizens.” He urged his colleagues to lead with humility, integrity, and a renewed commitment to excellence.

The event was attended by senior UPDF leaders, including Maj Gen Jack Bakasumba, Chief of Joint Staff; Maj Gen Francis Okello, Commandant of the National Defence College; Maj Gen Henry Masiko, Joint Staff Political Commissariat; Brig Gen David Gonyi, Chief of Staff for the Air Force; and Brig Gen James Kinalwa, among others. Family members and spouses of the promoted officers also joined in the celebration.

Lt Gen Okiding’s call to action underscores the UPDF's commitment to fostering integrity and professionalism as the foundation for a stronger national defense force.
