Kumasi Presenter Arrested for Spreading False News Ahead of Elections

Oheneba Nana Asiedu, a Kumasi-based radio and television presenter, has been arrested by the Ghana Police Service for allegedly publishing false information. The arrest occurred on Saturday, November 23, 2024, and is linked to offenses under Section 208 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).

According to a police statement, Asiedu is currently in custody and will be presented in court to face charges. The arrest follows an invitation by the police to assist in an investigation into a video circulating on social media. In the video, Asiedu, speaking on Wontumi FM, allegedly urged voters to cast their ballots for presidential candidates on separate dates during the December 2024 general elections. Authorities described these claims as false and potentially disruptive to public order.

The police have directed Asiedu to report to the Ashanti Regional Police Command as part of ongoing investigations into the matter. Officials emphasized the seriousness of spreading false information, particularly in the critical period leading up to the elections.

In their statement, the police called on the public and media practitioners to exercise responsibility when disseminating information. They warned against the publication of false news, citing the potential risks to public peace during the electoral process.

The arrest has sparked discussions about the role of media in maintaining social stability during elections. With the December 2024 general elections approaching, tensions are high, and misinformation can easily disrupt public confidence in the democratic process.

This incident underscores the importance of accurate reporting and the legal consequences of spreading unverified information. The police reiterated their commitment to ensuring peaceful elections and holding accountable those who attempt to destabilize the process through falsehoods.

The case serves as a reminder to media practitioners of their critical role in shaping public discourse and maintaining peace. Authorities continue to urge journalists and broadcasters to prioritize factual reporting and avoid content that could incite unrest.

Asiedu’s case is expected to proceed in court in the coming days, where the legal process will determine the outcome of the charges against him.
