Why the Day of Your Surgery Matters, According to Experts

If you’re scheduling surgery, the day of the week you choose could impact your recovery, a hospital expert warns.

Why Surgery Timing Matters

Each year, around 15 million Americans undergo surgery, according to the American College of Surgeons. However, many hospitals across the U.S. face overcrowding, surgery delays, and shortages of post-operation beds. These challenges not only increase costs for hospitals but also put stress on doctors, nurses, and patients. In some cases, these delays can be life-threatening.

With this in mind, some healthcare experts advise choosing your surgery day carefully. Scheduling your operation on certain days—like Thursday or Friday—could lead to longer hospital stays or delayed recovery due to reduced staffing over the weekend.

The Risks of Late-Week Surgeries

Hospitals typically operate with fewer staff on weekends, meaning fewer specialists, reduced lab services, and slower response times for complications that may arise after surgery. If a patient undergoes surgery late in the week and experiences postoperative issues, they may not receive immediate attention, leading to longer recovery times and potential complications.

For instance, a shortage of available beds can force patients to remain in post-surgery recovery areas for extended periods, delaying their transition to specialized care units. Doctors and nurses, already stretched thin, may not have the same level of support on weekends as they do during the week.

A Plan to Improve Hospital Efficiency

Some experts argue that hospitals should optimize surgery schedules to reduce the risks associated with late-week operations. A potential solution includes adjusting operating room schedules, improving patient flow, and ensuring adequate weekend staffing to provide consistent post-surgical care.

Patients can also take steps to advocate for their own health by discussing scheduling options with their doctors and understanding the hospital’s post-surgical care plans.

While emergencies are unpredictable, elective surgeries can be planned, and choosing the right day may improve recovery outcomes and reduce the risk of complications.
