Putin Supports US Ceasefire Plan but Calls for More Talks

Russian President Vladimir Putin announced on Thursday that Moscow agrees with U.S. proposals for a ceasefire in Ukraine but stressed that several key details still need to be worked out. He emphasized that any ceasefire agreement must address the root causes of the ongoing conflict to ensure a lasting resolution.

Speaking at a press conference, Putin acknowledged that discussions on ending the war are progressing but maintained that Russia’s security concerns must be taken into account. He did not provide specific details about the U.S. ceasefire proposal but indicated that negotiations would continue to resolve outstanding issues.

The war in Ukraine has been ongoing since Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022, with both sides suffering heavy losses. International efforts to broker peace have faced challenges, with previous ceasefire talks failing due to disagreements over territorial control and security guarantees.

Putin’s statement comes at a time when the United States and its allies have been pushing for diplomatic solutions to reduce hostilities. While Washington has not publicly disclosed the specifics of its proposal, U.S. officials have consistently urged Russia to withdraw its forces from Ukrainian territory as part of any peace deal.

Despite expressing willingness to discuss a ceasefire, Putin reiterated Russia’s stance that Ukraine must recognize Russian territorial claims, particularly in regions Moscow has annexed. Ukraine, however, has rejected any settlement that does not involve a full withdrawal of Russian troops from its internationally recognized borders.

The Kremlin’s position on negotiations remains firm, with Russian officials repeatedly stating that any ceasefire must guarantee Ukraine will not join NATO and that Western military support for Kyiv should be limited. These conditions have been a major point of contention, making it difficult to reach a consensus on ending the war.

International reactions to Putin’s remarks have been mixed. Some Western leaders view them as a sign that Moscow may be open to diplomatic engagement, while others remain skeptical, arguing that Russia has used ceasefire talks in the past as a tactic to regroup and strengthen its military position.

As discussions continue, it remains unclear whether both sides can find common ground. However, with ongoing humanitarian concerns and economic pressures affecting both Russia and Ukraine, the push for a negotiated settlement is likely to remain a key focus for global leaders in the coming months.
