South Korea Court Reinstates PM Han Duck-soo After Impeachment

South Korea's Constitutional Court has overturned the impeachment of Prime Minister Han Duck-soo, reinstating him as the country's acting president. This decision comes after political turmoil and a series of impeachments that have shaken the country’s leadership in recent months.

Han had stepped in as acting president in December when President Yoon Suk Yeol was suspended and impeached by parliament for attempting to declare martial law. However, Han’s time in power was short-lived, as just two weeks later, lawmakers voted to impeach him as well. Since then, Deputy Prime Minister Choi Sang-mok has been overseeing the government.

The political crisis in South Korea began when President Yoon's controversial attempt to impose martial law led to widespread unrest. Following his impeachment, Han blocked the appointment of new judges to the Constitutional Court, an action that was seen as an attempt to prevent the opposition from strengthening their case against Yoon. In response, the opposition pushed for Han’s impeachment.

Despite these tensions, the Constitutional Court ruled seven to one on Monday to dismiss the impeachment of Han. After the ruling, Han expressed his gratitude to the court, saying, “I thank the Constitutional Court for its wise decision. I will work to bring the government to order.” His reinstatement marks a crucial point in South Korea’s ongoing political struggle.

South Korea is now waiting for the Constitutional Court’s upcoming decision on President Yoon’s impeachment. Yoon was suspended from office on December 14 after being impeached by parliament. However, his impeachment will only become permanent if upheld by the court. If the court rules in his favor, Yoon will resume his duties as president.

Protests have been escalating in Seoul in recent weeks, with both supporters and opponents of President Yoon taking to the streets. The outcome of Yoon's impeachment trial remains uncertain, and the political situation in South Korea continues to unfold with high tension.
