Gachagua Tells Mt Kenya Residents to Demand Cash Ahead of Ruto's Tour

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has urged residents of Mt Kenya to prepare for handouts ahead of President William Ruto’s planned visit to the region. Speaking in Naivasha on March 29, 2025, during a church event, Gachagua claimed that money had already been packed in sacks for distribution during the tour.

Gachagua, who was removed from office following an impeachment motion six months ago, advised residents not to accept small amounts in exchange for attending Ruto’s events. He specifically told them not to accept less than Ksh3,000 if they were paid to listen to the president.

However, he warned against taking the money home, claiming it was "cursed" and should only be spent at the marketplace.

“Even now, he is preparing to visit. Is he coming to tell the truth or lies? You already know, but don’t worry,” Gachagua told the crowd.

“Money has been packed in sacks, so be ready. Eat the money, but do not take it home. It is cursed. Spend it in the market and do not mix it with your own money,” he added.

The former DP went on to say that listening to lies should come at a high price. “Do not accept Ksh200 to listen to lies. That would be foolish. The price for listening to lies should be Ksh3,000 and above,” he insisted.

Despite his claims, Gachagua did not provide any evidence that money would be handed out during Ruto’s visit.

Gachagua’s Message to Ruto

Gachagua also sent a message to President Ruto, saying he should be ready to give out money during his tour. He argued that Mt Kenya residents had supported Ruto in the 2022 General Election without demanding handouts, and now, they deserved to be rewarded.

Ahead of the visit, the government has dispatched top officials to prepare the ground in what has been seen as an effort to win back support in the region. Large billboards welcoming Ruto have been put up in major Mt Kenya towns, including Kiambu, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, and Embu.

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has also been touring the region ahead of Ruto’s visit, which is expected to begin in the coming week.
