South Sudan has denied claims that it sent Kenyan opposition leader Raila Odinga to Uganda to meet Vice President Riek Machar. This comes after Raila’s trip to South Sudan, which was followed by a visit to Entebbe, Uganda, where he held discussions with Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni.
Raila’s visit to both countries raised speculation about his involvement in South Sudan’s internal politics, particularly regarding the ongoing conflict between President Salva Kiir and Vice President Riek Machar. However, South Sudan's government quickly clarified that Raila’s mission was not linked to mediation efforts between Kiir and Machar.
After his time in South Sudan, Raila traveled to Uganda to meet with President Museveni. During this visit, Raila discussed diplomatic initiatives aimed at resolving the ongoing tensions between the two South Sudanese leaders. According to sources, he is expected to provide a detailed briefing to the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) leaders about his diplomatic efforts to ease the conflict.
The South Sudanese government reiterated that Raila's meetings were part of broader regional efforts to foster peace and stability in the region, but emphasized that his visit to Uganda had no connection to directly addressing the issues between Kiir and Machar.
Despite the official clarification, the visit sparked further interest in the roles that regional leaders are playing in attempting to mediate the longstanding conflict in South Sudan. The situation between Kiir and Machar remains tense, with sporadic violence continuing to impact the country.
As Raila prepares to update IGAD leaders on his diplomatic outreach, the focus remains on finding lasting peace solutions for South Sudan. It remains unclear whether his efforts will contribute significantly to resolving the deep divisions between the two leaders or if further intervention from regional actors is needed to bring about a lasting peace.
