At least four students were injured in a shooting at Wilmer-Hutchins High School in Dallas on Tuesday afternoon. The incident occurred around 1:25 p.m. when a suspect opened fire, leaving a 17-year-old with a gunshot wound to the leg. Two other students were also shot, while a fourth student was grazed. The victims' ages ranged from 15 to 18. One of the students sustained serious injuries, while the others’ injuries were not life-threatening.
Following the shooting, the Dallas Independent School District (DISD) quickly secured the school. A police officer assigned to the campus responded within two minutes, and additional law enforcement agencies soon arrived at the scene. Although the suspect was identified, they had not been arrested by the time of the news conference. Police confirmed that someone had opened the door to the suspect, allowing them entry to the school.
Parents and guardians were able to reunite with their children at Eagles Stadium, located next to the school. By 6:40 p.m., all students had been picked up by their families. DISD officials announced that counselors were available on-site to support students and staff during this difficult time. The district also reassured the public by stating that the school would remain closed for the rest of the week, with additional officers stationed at other schools within the district.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott expressed his condolences, offering support for the victims and their families. In a post on social media, he wrote, "Our hearts go out to the victims of the senseless act of violence at Wilmer-Hutchins High School." Abbott also committed to providing law enforcement with the necessary resources to apprehend the suspect and bring them to justice.
The shooting follows a similar incident at the high school nearly a year ago, which led to the implementation of safety measures such as metal detectors and clear backpacks. The investigation is ongoing, and the community remains in shock over the violent act.
