Two women have been arrested after one of them posted a WhatsApp status showing off a pistol and issuing a threat.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) confirmed that the arrest happened on Tuesday, April 15, following reports of a disturbing WhatsApp status update by one of the suspects. The woman reportedly shared an image of herself holding a Canik pistol while warning that any man planning to dump her would face serious consequences.
DCI detectives from the Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau in Nyando traced the woman to her residence in Awasi town. She was living in a two-bedroom house which she shared with another woman, who was also arrested during the operation.
Upon searching the house, officers discovered the pistol hidden under the bed. It had been wrapped in clothing and placed inside a basin to conceal it. In addition to the weapon, detectives also found a fake motorcycle number plate in the same residence.
The two suspects were taken into custody and are currently being processed before their expected arraignment in court. Authorities say investigations are still underway to determine the source of the gun and whether more people were involved.
The DCI stated that the post raised serious concerns due to the display of the firearm and the threatening nature of the message. The weapon, a Canik pistol, is undergoing further forensic examination.
This case comes just days after a separate WhatsApp-related arrest in Kirinyaga. On Monday, April 14, a man appeared in court after allegedly sending threatening messages to Mwea Member of Parliament Mary Maingi. According to court documents, the accused used WhatsApp on March 27 to send a message from his phone that was meant to cause harm or fear to the MP.
The back-to-back incidents have raised concern about the misuse of social media platforms like WhatsApp to issue threats or incite fear. Security agencies have warned that they will continue to monitor digital platforms and take swift action against individuals who engage in such behavior.
Investigations into both cases are ongoing, with authorities urging the public to report any suspicious or threatening activity shared online.
