Kenya Suspends Gambling Ads and Influencer Marketing for 30 Days

The government has temporarily suspended all gambling advertisements and influencer marketing for betting firms for 30 days.

In a statement issued by Betting Control and Licensing Board (BCLB) Chairperson Jane Makau, the move is meant to curb the growing exposure of minors and vulnerable groups to gambling promotions. Makau expressed concern over the increased airing of gambling adverts during the watershed period — between 5:00 am and 10:00 pm — which is meant to protect children and young viewers.

“Of particular concern is the rampant airing of gambling advertisements during the watershed period, thereby exposing vulnerable members of the population, particularly minors, who are gradually drawn into gambling-related addiction,” she stated.

Makau noted that gambling advertisements have become aggressive and widespread, appearing on television, radio, digital platforms, and through popular social media influencers. The board said it is concerned that this form of promotion is influencing underage viewers and encouraging addiction, especially since the ads are often not properly regulated or clearly labeled with age restrictions.

She added that betting firms have not been fully compliant with the advertising guidelines already in place. These guidelines include proper labeling of content, ensuring responsible messaging, and limiting the time and platform where such ads can be aired.

As a result, the BCLB is now enforcing a 30-day suspension on all forms of gambling advertisements and influencer engagements to allow for a thorough review of the current marketing practices. This pause is also expected to give time for the industry to align with legal and ethical advertising standards.

The Board emphasized that it will not tolerate any form of non-compliance during the suspension period. All betting companies and their marketing partners have been directed to adhere strictly to the new directive, with possible penalties for those who violate it.

This latest measure is part of a broader government effort to protect the public — especially the youth — from the negative social and psychological effects of gambling.
