The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has opened a detailed investigation into the suspicious death of Father John Maina, a well-known Catholic priest from Igwamiti Parish in Nyahururu. The priest’s death has raised serious concerns after reports suggested he may have been abducted and possibly poisoned.
Father Maina had recently taken part in a major religious event on April 27, 2025, marking the Silver Jubilee anniversary of Igwamiti Catholic Parish and the ordination of Father Simon Thuita. The celebration was attended by high-profile guests, including former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and several political leaders. During the event, Maina reportedly received monetary gifts, one of which was allegedly from Gachagua.
On May 15, 2025, Father Maina was found in a critical condition near the Diotomite stage along the Nakuru-Nairobi highway. A motorcycle rider discovered him injured and confused. Before being rushed to St. Joseph’s Mission Hospital in Gilgil, the priest told the rider that he had been abducted from Nyahururu. Medical staff reported deep bruises on the left side of his head. Sadly, he died shortly after being admitted.
His body was later taken to the Nyahururu Sub-County morgue. A post-mortem was conducted on May 19 by government pathologist Dr. Ngulungu, who reported that the head injuries were unlikely to be the primary cause of death. Toxicology tests were ordered to determine whether poison or another substance may have been involved.
Emerging details indicate that Father Maina may have been followed by people allegedly demanding a portion of the money he received at the April 27 ceremony. It has also been reported that he feared for his safety in the days before his death, although he never officially reported any threats.
DCI detectives are now examining forensic evidence and have recorded multiple witness statements. Investigators believe the incident was a targeted attack and are actively working to identify those responsible.
The DCI has assured the public and the Church community that the case is being treated with the seriousness it deserves and that all leads will be pursued to ensure justice for Father Maina.
