President William Ruto on Wednesday, May 28, led the 22nd National Prayer Breakfast at Safari Park Hotel in Nairobi, joining fellow leaders in a moment of reflection and unity for the country.
The event brought together top government officials, religious leaders, and diplomats under the theme “Rise and Rebuild,” inspired by the Bible verse Isaiah 60:1. The annual prayer gathering, sponsored by Parliament and organized with help from volunteer prayer groups, is held every year on the last Thursday of May.
In attendance were several high-ranking leaders, including Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, First Lady Rachel Ruto, Second Lady Joyce Kithure, and Chief Justice Martha Koome. National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula and Senate Speaker Amason Kingi were also present, highlighting the event's significance across all arms of government.
Other prominent figures included National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah, Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot, Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja, Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru, and South Mugirango MP Silvanus Osoro. The guest list extended further to Cabinet Secretaries, Members of Parliament, Senators, diplomats, and faith leaders, showing broad national and international participation.
President Ruto took time to greet guests and engage with leaders from various sectors, emphasizing the spirit of unity and national healing that the prayer breakfast seeks to promote. The event serves as a platform for leaders to connect beyond politics and policy, coming together to pray for Kenya's future.
The first National Prayer Breakfast was held in May 2003, shortly after the late President Mwai Kibaki assumed office. Since then, it has become a key event on Kenya’s political and spiritual calendar, offering a rare moment for leaders to reflect, pray, and reaffirm their commitment to public service and national cohesion.
This year’s focus on rising and rebuilding comes at a time when Kenya faces multiple challenges, including economic strain and social tension. The message of unity, hope, and renewal echoed throughout the event, reinforcing its role as more than just a ceremonial gathering, but a moment of collective resolve.
