The police have launched an investigation into the alleged assault of a Joy FM journalist during the arrest of a prominent political figure in Accra. The incident reportedly took place on May 27, 2025, at the offices of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).
Latif Iddrisu, a journalist with Joy FM, was allegedly assaulted while covering the arrest of Mr. Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi. The incident has sparked concern over the treatment of media professionals during law enforcement operations.
According to a press release issued on May 28, 2025, the Greater Accra Regional Police Command is actively reviewing the circumstances surrounding the incident. The police said they are examining video footage and collecting eyewitness accounts to determine what happened and who may be responsible for the alleged assault.
Superintendent Juliana Obeng, Head of Public Affairs for the Accra Region, signed the statement on behalf of the Police Service. In it, the service emphasized its responsibility to protect the rights of all citizens, including journalists. The statement also underlined the police’s dedication to upholding the rule of law during all official duties.
“The Ghana Police Service reaffirms its commitment to upholding the rights of all individuals, including members of the media, and ensuring that the rule of law is maintained throughout our operations,” the press release stated.
The alleged assault has attracted public interest, with several individuals and media organizations calling for transparency in the police investigation. Many believe that ensuring accountability in this case will reinforce public trust in the police and help protect press freedom in Ghana.
As the investigation continues, the public awaits further updates from the authorities. The outcome of the police probe is expected to shed more light on the events that led to the journalist’s alleged assault and determine the next steps in addressing the matter.
