The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) says it has killed more than 15 terrorists during precision airstrikes on a newly identified hideout in the Sambisa forest area of Borno State. The operation, carried out on Wednesday west of Zuwa, was part of the ongoing counterinsurgency campaign under Operation Hadin Kai.
According to NAF spokesperson Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, the airstrikes followed credible intelligence and detailed surveillance confirming that the location was being used as a base by terrorist fighters and their commanders. These individuals were said to be responsible for recent attacks in and around the Bitta area.
“The mission destroyed key structures and inflicted heavy losses on the terrorists,” Ejodame explained in a statement issued Thursday in Abuja. He noted that the strikes were part of broader efforts to degrade terrorist networks and disrupt their ability to coordinate attacks.
The targeted air interdiction was designed not only to neutralize immediate threats but also to support ground forces operating across the region. Ejodame emphasized that the NAF remains committed to professionalism in conducting such missions and continues to work closely with other security agencies in safeguarding citizens.
He further stated that every successful strike brings Nigeria closer to lasting peace by weakening the capacity of terrorist groups. The operation underscores the Air Force’s ongoing role in dismantling insurgent hideouts and protecting communities across the northeast, where Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) have maintained a strong presence for years.
Sambisa forest has long been known as a major stronghold for insurgents, serving as both a hiding place and operational base. Over the years, the Nigerian military has carried out multiple raids and aerial bombardments in the area, aiming to reduce the influence of armed groups that have caused widespread displacement and insecurity.
The latest success adds to a series of offensives carried out under Operation Hadin Kai, which seeks to restore peace in Borno and other parts of the northeast affected by terrorism. While challenges remain, the military says sustained pressure through combined ground and air operations is gradually degrading the operational capacity of insurgent groups.
