KFS Cautions Visitors After Viral Python Video in Karura Forest

Kenya Forest Service (KFS) has issued a public advisory after a video showing a large python crossing a footpath in Karura Forest went viral online.

The footage captured the snake slithering across a murram road before disappearing into nearby vegetation, sparking concern among frequent visitors to the popular Nairobi forest. However, in a statement released on Friday, KFS clarified that while it is aware of the video, it cannot confirm whether the incident actually occurred in Karura or if the footage is recent.

“KFS notes that although pythons have been sighted within Karura in the past years, namely in 2019 and in 2022, the current sighting and the photo in circulation are yet to be authenticated,” the agency said.

The service explained that snakes, including pythons, have occasionally been spotted in the forest, but emphasized that there is no verified evidence to confirm this particular case. Even so, KFS has not ruled out the possibility and is conducting an internal review to establish the facts.

Until investigations are complete, visitors have been urged to exercise caution. KFS outlined several safety measures, including sticking strictly to designated jogging and walking trails, keeping pets on leashes within approved areas, and reporting any wildlife encounters directly to forest rangers stationed at the gates.

“As a precaution, members of the public should immediately alert KFS rangers if they encounter a python or any unusual wildlife activity,” the statement added.

KFS also confirmed that it is working alongside other relevant authorities to monitor the situation and develop appropriate responses if necessary. “KFS will collaborate with relevant government agencies to explore potential solutions to this matter and will advise the public accordingly,” the statement read.

Karura Forest, covering more than 1,000 hectares, is one of Nairobi’s most valued green spaces. Known for its scenic trails, waterfalls, birdlife, and historic caves, it attracts thousands of local and international visitors every year. The agency emphasized that while rare wildlife sightings are part of the forest’s natural ecosystem, public safety remains its top priority.
