Two separate shootings at South Carolina State University on Saturday night left one woman dead and a man injured, prompting an immediate campus-wide lockdown. Authorities confirmed that the two incidents occurred within the same evening but stressed that they did not appear to be connected.
The State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) reported that the woman who lost her life has not yet been publicly identified, with her details expected to be released later by the Orangeburg County Coroner’s Office. The man who was wounded, whose identity was also not immediately released, was taken to a local hospital for treatment. Investigators have not provided any information on suspects, and the investigation remains ongoing.
In a notice on its official website, the university confirmed that it entered lockdown after reports of shots fired at Hugine Suites, a student residence hall on the Orangeburg campus. Students living in the building were instructed to stay inside, while those who were away during the time of the incident were told to report to the Smith–Hammond–Middleton Memorial Center. Students in other residence halls were ordered to return to their rooms, and off-campus residents were asked to leave the university grounds.
University officials canceled all scheduled homecoming events for Sunday following the shootings. They also urged non-students to avoid entering the campus as security concerns heightened. The university confirmed that SLED had been formally requested to take over the investigation.
South Carolina leaders also reacted to the disturbing news. Senator Tim Scott posted on X, formerly Twitter, that his office was closely monitoring developments while praying for safety on campus. Representative Nancy Mace also expressed concern, urging students and staff to follow law enforcement instructions as authorities responded to the crisis.
The lockdown comes at a time when college campuses across the United States have been grappling with growing concerns about safety, including recent swatting hoaxes that have triggered false active-shooter responses.
For now, the community at South Carolina State University remains shaken as authorities work to determine what led to the two shootings and whether arrests will soon follow.
