Former Football Star Collins ‘Gattuso’ Okoth Faces Murder Charges in Tragic Death of Three-Year-Old Girl

Former footballer Collins 'Gattuso' Okoth, once a star midfielder for Gor Mahia and Harambee Stars, appeared in court alongside co-accused Silvia Aoko after spending months in custody. Both are facing murder charges in connection with the death of a three-year-old girl, Scovian Maya, who tragically passed away under mysterious circumstances in April 2024.

The case has captured nationwide attention, given Okoth's public profile and the heartbreaking nature of the charges. On Thursday, Okoth and Aoko stood before the High Court in Nairobi, where the results of several medical evaluations, conducted to determine their fitness to stand trial, were presented. Both were deemed fit to face the murder charges, marking a significant development in the case.

Scovian Maya, also known as Pamela Atieno, died on the night of April 21-22, 2024, in Lucky Summer Estate, Ruaraka, in Nairobi. It is alleged that the child was murdered around 1 a.m., though the exact circumstances surrounding her death remain unclear. Okoth and Aoko have consistently denied any involvement in the child’s tragic death.

During the court proceedings, the prosecution, led by Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions Gikui Gachuhi, strongly opposed the release of the accused on bond, citing the severity of the charges. The court directed the prosecution to submit an affidavit opposing bail within three days, with the defense given an opportunity to respond.

Okoth’s involvement in this case has shocked many, particularly those who remember him for his successful football career. Known for his tough and aggressive playing style, he earned the nickname ‘Gattuso,’ after Italian football legend Gennaro Gattuso. Okoth was a fan favorite, known for his gritty performances in high-stakes matches. He played for Gor Mahia, Kenya's most decorated football club, and later joined AFC Leopards before injuries led to his retirement in 2018.

Following his retirement, Okoth transitioned into football punditry and was last seen publicly as a TV analyst for the Mashemeji Derby at Nyayo National Stadium, just one day before the alleged crime took place.

Since the accusations surfaced, Okoth has been held at the Industrial Area Remand Prison, while his co-accused, Aoko, is in custody at Lang'ata Women's Prison. The legal proceedings are ongoing, and the next court mention is scheduled for September 25, 2024. Both defendants await their fate as the court deliberates on the case, with the public keenly following each development in this tragic story.
