Brentford's Yoane Wissa made an immediate impact, scoring the fastest goal of the Premier League season. His goal came after a defensive miscommunication between John Stones and goalkeeper Ederson, who failed to clear Keane Lewis-Potter’s header, leaving Wissa to nod the ball into an open net.
Manchester City appeared shaken, but Haaland quickly restored balance to the match. He capitalized on a loose ball in the Brentford box after Kevin de Bruyne was tackled, coolly driving home to equalize. Despite personal tragedy—playing shortly after the death of a close family friend—the Norwegian striker demonstrated remarkable composure and determination.
Haaland wasn’t finished. He scored his second goal before halftime, muscling past Brentford’s Ethan Pinnock to latch onto a long pass from Ederson, pushing City ahead. With this performance, Haaland edged closer to an impressive record: becoming the first player since 1946 to score three consecutive hat-tricks in the English top flight. However, this feat eluded him.
The Manchester City striker came close to securing his third goal several times. Brentford's goalkeeper Mark Flekken denied him, tipping one effort over the bar. Haaland then struck the post with a first-time shot, and while he pounced on the rebound, he couldn’t generate enough power to finish.
The home crowd was eager for Haaland’s hat-trick, with his father, Alfie Haaland, watching from the stands. Even Pep Guardiola, City’s manager, left Haaland on the field, despite their upcoming Champions League match against Inter Milan. Yet, despite all efforts, the striker had to settle for two goals on the day.
While Haaland didn’t achieve his historic third hat-trick, his contributions were crucial in securing Manchester City's 100% record, maintaining their dominant form in the Premier League.
