In Kampala, Uganda, Prime Minister Rt. Hon. Robinah Nabbanja officially sent off the Ugandan participants selected for the 2024 Huawei Leadership, Employability, Advancement Possibility (LEAP) digital talent training program in Shenzhen, China. At the flag-off ceremony, she urged the participants to represent Uganda with pride, make the most of this opportunity, and apply their skills to strengthen Uganda's workforce. She thanked Huawei Technologies Uganda for their commitment to advancing Uganda’s digital capabilities over the years, saying, "Thank you, Huawei Technologies Uganda, for this initiative and your commitment to the technological advancement of Uganda over the years."
The LEAP program, Huawei's flagship social responsibility initiative, has been held annually in Uganda since its inception in 2016. Since then, 50 Ugandans have participated in in-person training in China, with another 162 completing the program online and earning certification. This initiative is part of Huawei’s efforts to bridge the gap between formal education and industry-required skills, promoting Uganda's development within the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) sector.
Mr. Ssali Gao, Deputy Managing Director of Huawei Technologies (Uganda) Co. Limited, highlighted that ICT plays a crucial role in the growth of diverse industries. He noted that Huawei, as an industry leader, is focused on building Uganda’s ICT industry and fostering long-term economic, social, and environmental sustainability. By offering programs like LEAP, Huawei aims to provide students with practical skills needed in the digital workforce, addressing the need for skilled technical staff to meet the demands of a rapidly evolving ICT sector.
The five selected Ugandan participants will join other global participants in a wide array of training modules. They will be exposed to various aspects of technology, leadership, and culture through courses in:
Technology and Innovation
Participants will receive foundational and advanced training in key technologies such as 5G, cloud computing, and artificial intelligence (AI). They will also hear from scientists and industry experts on topics ranging from cybersecurity to smart city development.
Discovering Huawei
This module provides an inside look at Huawei’s evolution, through corporate presentations and virtual tours of Huawei’s campuses and flagship stores. Participants will gain insight into the company's history, core innovations, and global footprint.
Leadership & Career Development
To prepare for diverse work environments, participants will learn about the "7 Habits of Highly Successful People," explore cross-cultural teamwork, and study effective leadership models.
Traditional and Modern China
In addition to technical learning, participants will have the opportunity to explore Chinese culture. Virtual tours and selected documentaries will introduce them to the country's rich heritage, from traditional customs to modern landmarks.
Huawei’s LEAP program aims to empower participants with skills that drive innovation and practical application, building Uganda’s ICT talent pool. By investing in initiatives like LEAP, Huawei demonstrates its commitment to nurturing Uganda's next generation of tech leaders.
