Kingston: Replacing Addo Now Could Harm Black Stars' World Cup Hopes

As the Black Stars prepare for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, former player Richard Kingston has insisted that removing coach Otto Addo would destabilize the team further. Addo’s leadership has come under intense scrutiny after Ghana failed to win a single match in six Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers, marking the country’s first absence from the tournament in 20 years.

The disappointing performance has sparked widespread criticism from fans and football stakeholders, many of whom have called for Addo’s removal. However, Kingston believes it would be premature to make such a drastic change.

In an interview with Flashscore, Kingston expressed his confidence in Addo’s ability to turn things around. He emphasized the importance of continuity, arguing that replacing the coach and his technical team could have disastrous consequences. “For me, at the moment, we shouldn’t change anything,” Kingston said. “I think Otto is even disappointed in himself. He’s asking himself what really happened and what he can do to improve.”

Kingston added that stability within the team is crucial, especially with the World Cup qualifiers ahead. “If we change the coach and the technical team and bring in new faces, it will be a disaster,” he warned. “I think we should allow him to finish the World Cup qualifiers. Who knows? Maybe he can qualify. After that, we can make a decision as a country.”

In the wake of the AFCON disappointment, Addo took full responsibility for the team’s failure and publicly apologized to Ghanaians. He acknowledged the significance of the AFCON tournament, stating that for him, it was even more important than the World Cup. “I would like to apologize for the results, very much,” Addo said. “For me personally, the AFCON is bigger. I know many people see the World Cup as more important, and I’ve already delivered that once. But this [failure] hurts, and I take full responsibility.”

As the Black Stars focus on the upcoming World Cup qualifiers, the debate continues over whether Addo should remain in charge or whether a change is necessary for the team's future success.
