Gang violence in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, has escalated dramatically since November 11, resulting in more than 150 deaths in just one week. The surge in violence adds to the grim toll for 2024, with a reported 4,500 fatalities so far, according to the United Nations.
UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, expressed grave concern over the deteriorating situation. “The intensifying violence in Port-au-Prince signals a potential descent into further chaos. Immediate action is essential to halt the gang warfare,” he stated.
The violence is fueled by the actions of Viv Ansanm, a coalition of gangs seeking to dominate the city. Armed groups now control roughly 80% of Port-au-Prince, severely restricting access to essential routes and services. While a Kenyan-led international security force has been deployed, local law enforcement remains heavily outgunned, limiting its ability to restore order.
Over the past week, coordinated attacks by gangs have not only killed over 150 people but also injured 92 and displaced 20,000 others. More than half of the casualties occurred during clashes between gangs and police. In response, police and civilian defense groups have launched operations, reportedly killing 28 gang members during overnight raids.
The desperation among residents is evident, with mob lynchings becoming more frequent. Such acts of vigilante justice recall brutal incidents like last year’s stoning and burning of suspected gang members. However, these actions further illustrate the breakdown of law and order in the capital.
Haiti’s worsening humanitarian crisis is amplifying the devastation. The United Nations estimates that 700,000 people are now internally displaced, half of whom are children. Many face severe shortages of food and clean water, while outbreaks of disease strain an already crumbling healthcare system.
Volker Turk has called for urgent measures to curb the violence and restore stability. “The rule of law must prevail over gang violence,” he emphasized, urging a united effort from both local and international communities.
The situation in Port-au-Prince continues to worsen, highlighting the need for coordinated action to address the insecurity and mounting humanitarian challenges plaguing Haiti.
