A British man fighting for Ukraine has reportedly been captured by Russian forces in the Kursk region. Multiple media outlets confirmed the news, and a video shared on the Telegram channel Troyka shows the detained man identifying himself as James Scott Rhys Anderson, a 22-year-old former British Army soldier who joined Ukraine’s International Legion.
In the video, Anderson appears during a question-and-answer session with his captors. Russian state news agency Tass, citing an unnamed "military source," stated that a “mercenary from Britain” was taken prisoner in the area.
The British Foreign Office issued a statement acknowledging the situation and confirmed it is “supporting the family of a British man following reports of his detention.” Officials have not provided further details about Anderson’s condition or circumstances.
Anderson’s father, Scott, expressed his distress to British news outlet the Daily Mail, saying he was in “complete shock” upon learning of his son’s capture. He also voiced fears that his son may face torture while in Russian custody.
The capture highlights the growing risks faced by foreign fighters joining the conflict in Ukraine, as tensions between Russia and Western-backed Ukraine remain high. While many foreign nationals have joined Ukraine’s International Legion to assist in its defense against Russian aggression, incidents like these underscore the dangers they face.
Neither the Russian nor Ukrainian governments have commented publicly on Anderson’s detention. The case adds to the ongoing challenges of ensuring the safety of foreign fighters and addressing the legal implications of their involvement in the conflict.
The British government continues to monitor the situation and is working to support Anderson’s family during this difficult time. Further updates on his status or potential diplomatic efforts for his release are expected as the situation develops.
