Trump Names Scott Bessent as Treasury Pick Amid Cabinet Updates

Donald Trump has nominated Scott Bessent to lead the US Treasury Department, a role pivotal to overseeing tax policies, public debt, and international financial relations. The announcement, made Friday evening, concluded one of the lengthiest decisions in assembling Trump’s team for his anticipated return to the presidency in January.

Bessent, a 62-year-old Wall Street veteran and early supporter of Trump’s 2024 campaign, brings a traditional financial background to the position. Known for his prior work with George Soros and his advocacy for Trump’s "America First" policies, Bessent has been vocal about extending tax cuts enacted during Trump’s first term. He has also endorsed the controversial use of tariffs, framing them as effective negotiation tools.

"Scott is widely respected as one of the world’s foremost international investors and geopolitical strategists," Trump stated on Truth Social. He praised Bessent’s commitment to policies designed to bolster U.S. competitiveness and address trade imbalances. Bessent has championed deregulation, low taxes, and affordable energy as critical components of a prosperous economy.

Additional Cabinet Picks Unveiled

In a series of Friday announcements, Trump nominated Congresswoman Lori Chavez-DeRemer as Labor Secretary. Chavez-DeRemer, 56, has pledged to enhance wages, improve working conditions, and revive manufacturing jobs. Though she narrowly lost her re-election bid in Oregon earlier this month, her nomination will not impact the Republican majority in the House.

Scott Turner, a former NFL player and Texas state legislator, was named Secretary of Housing and Urban Development. Trump also tapped Fox News contributor Dr. Janette Nesheiwat as Surgeon General and ex-Florida Congressman Dr. Dave Weldon as CDC Director. Additionally, Russell Vought, previously the director of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) under Trump, was reappointed to the same role.

Challenges Ahead for Bessent

If confirmed by the Senate, Bessent faces immediate challenges, including the impending expiration of Trump-era tax cuts. Bessent has warned that allowing them to lapse would result in the "largest tax increase in U.S. history." He will also oversee contentious trade policy changes, including sweeping tariffs on imports—a proposal causing concern among financial and corporate sectors.

Despite Trump’s preference for loyalists in other key roles, Bessent’s nomination reflects the critical nature of the Treasury Department’s functions, which include managing federal debt, supervising banks, and enforcing sanctions. Trump has emphasized Bessent’s role in tackling federal debt, a pressing issue for both financial markets and fiscal conservatives.

With most of his cabinet in place, Trump has signaled readiness to implement his policy agenda, positioning loyal and experienced figures to lead his administration’s second term
