Iran’s Ambassador to Russia, Kazem Jalali, has condemned the actions of police officers involved in detaining Iranian students after a mass brawl outside Kazan Federal University. The ambassador called for accountability, emphasizing the need for appropriate measures against those responsible for mistreating Iranian citizens.
The incident occurred on November 22 near the university’s External Relations Department on Gvardeyskaya Street. According to the Russian Interior Ministry, a dispute between two individuals escalated into a larger altercation involving several students, leading to police intervention and multiple arrests.
Ambassador Jalali shared his concerns on the social media platform X on November 23, stating that any mistreatment of Iranian students is unacceptable and must be condemned. He also discussed the matter in a recorded video with the consul general in the Republic of Tatarstan. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is closely monitoring the situation to ensure a resolution.
“Any inappropriate behavior towards Iranian students and citizens is subject to condemnation,” Jalali wrote. He added that the issue is being taken seriously, with progress already being made in addressing the incident.
In response to the arrests, dozens of Iranian students held a sit-in protest against both the university and the local police. The students were reportedly at the university’s “Visa Extension Centre” to renew their visas when the confrontation broke out. Participants included students from Iran, Uzbekistan, China, and Turkmenistan.
The Iranian Consulate General in Kazan issued a communique, urging calm among Iranian nationals in the area. Meanwhile, the Investigative Committee of Tatarstan has launched a criminal case against a participant accused of using violence against a law enforcement officer during the altercation.
The incident underscores the growing tensions between foreign students and local authorities in Kazan. It also highlights diplomatic sensitivities, as Iran and Russia continue to strengthen ties amid international isolation.
Iranian officials are pressing Russian authorities for accountability while working to protect their citizens studying abroad. This intervention reflects Iran’s determination to address issues affecting its nationals and ensure their safety and dignity in foreign countries.
